Volunteer tax assistance

Where to get professional tax preparation help? How do you file taxes for free? What is Vita tax program? IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.


You will receive training to provide free tax help for low-to-moderate income families who need assistance preparing their tax returns. The VITA and TCE programs offer free tax help to people with low-to-moderate income, senior citizens, persons with disability, those who have limited English proficiency and others who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.

This program promotes financial well-being, one of United Way’s nine Steps to Success. Our team of staff and volunteers prepare income tax returns for qualifying families and individuals and advocate for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). IRS trained and certified volunteers are available at sites throughout Northern Virginia and will ensure you receive the maximum tax refund and help determine if you are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). They can inform taxpayers about special tax credits for which they may qualify such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled. While VTAP strives to handle every tax return in a timely manner, some may take us a bit longer. We will advise you if your return is something we can prepare, and if it is, we will work to better prepare for your appointment.


This service helps low- to moderate-income individuals, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and limited English speakers file. The program is also available to persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.
